The Mercer beach volleyball team made the decision to switch from the ASUN Conference to the Sun Belt Conference starting in the 2023 season. Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Southern Miss and the University of Louisiana Monroe were in the conference previously. Joining the Bears in the switch will be Stephan F. Austin, the College of Charleston and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
Men’s Basketball
Mercer’s baseball team hosted their annual First Pitch Classic on Jan. 18 to kickstart the 2023 season. The event featured a cash bar, a silent auction and an opportunity to win either $5,000 or $10,000 in a raffle.
The Mercer men's basketball team now rests at a 5-5 overall standing after a week of back and forth wins and losses.
Football
The Bears fell to the Furman University Paladins 23-13 in a crucial conference game.
To top off homecoming celebrations this week, Bennett Cate '23 and Michelly Pereira '23 were crowned respectively Homecoming king and queen during halftime at the football game Saturday.

The men’s basketball team played LaGrange College and defeated the Panthers 107-56 in the season opener at Hawkins Arena Thursday.
Mercer’s football team traveled to Lexington, Virginia on Saturday to take on Virginia Military College and defeated the Keydets 55-14.
The men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted an event Monday in Mercer Village to kick off their seasons. The event featured free pizza and t-shirts as well as bounce houses and basketball goals.
The Bears took on Eastern Tennessee State University on Saturday and won 55-33 against the Bucs. Fred Payton set a record for touchdown passes in one game, completing five in the game.
The Bears defeated Western Carolina 49-6 at Five Star Stadium on Saturday.
The football team traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina over the weekend and defeated the Wofford Terriers 42-7, and brought home their third consecutive win.

The Mercer Bears played the Citadel on Saturday, who came off a big win against last year’s conference champions, Eastern Tennessee State University. Going into the game, the Bears were confident after spending two weeks in practice preparing for the Bulldogs. Coach Drew Cronic spent the bye week getting the team ready for the Bulldog’s triple-option offense and powerful defense.
After addressing a few takeaways from the Auburn game two weeks ago, head football coach Drew Cronic described how he is feeling as his team takes on the Citadel this Saturday. The team and staff are excited to host their first conference game of the season at Five Star Stadium as they take on the Bulldogs, who just defeated Eastern Tennessee State University, the reigning conference champions.
