Women’s soccer (1-2) fell to the University of Alabama (5-0) on the road, 3-0, on Friday, August 29. The strong SEC side often found themselves in front of Mercer's goal, registering 31 shots while Mercer tallied one in the game.
Former Bears striker and last year’s SoCon Player of the Year, Larkin Thomason, got out to a hot start against her former team. Thomason forced a save from the Mercer keeper, Lindsay Bell '26, in the first five minutes. While Mercer put up a fight, Thomason slipped a quick shot by Bell in the 18th minute to put the Tide up 1-0.
The rest of the half continued similarly, as Alabama, who had already beaten two SoCon sides this season, doubled their lead on a goal assisted by Thomason. Mercer’s defense solidified after the half, bouncing back from a tough opening 45 minutes with help from Bell, who made a season-record 10 saves in the game.
“I was proud of how we played in the second half for the first 40 minutes,” Mercer head coach Tony Economopoulos told Mercer Athletics, “We battled and made it difficult for Alabama.”
The Bears are on the road in Montgomery, Al. for their next game against Alabama State University, kicking off at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, and will return to Macon on Thursday to take on Kennesaw State University at 7:00 p.m.
