Join The Cluster’s award-winning staff! All applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students at Mercer University on the Macon campus. Students of any class or major are encouraged to apply.

Most current staff members started as contributors. To get involved with The Cluster, attend a story meeting or contact a section editor. Story meetings currently take place Mondays at 5:20 p.m. in the Center for Collaborative Journalism (unless class is not in session at Mercer or otherwise noted). Meeting times for the 2022-2023 academic year are TBD.

Open Positions

News Editor

The News Editor will:

  • collect story ideas for each story meeting that are timely and relevant to our audience and assign them to contributors; stories should pertain to Mercer’s campus and the Macon community

  • edit all News articles for AP Style, accuracy, flow and grammar

  • respond to pitches from contributors

  • help writers make contact with sources

  • work quickly if and when there is Breaking News 

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings and other staff gatherings

Recommended Qualifications

  • experience writing in The Cluster’s News section

  • knowledge of AP Style

  • comfortable interviewing sources

  • strong leadership and communication skills

  • ability to meet hard deadlines

  • ability to give and receive feedback

  • comfortable with potentially sensitive topics

  • willingness to speak to and meet with members of the Mercer/Macon communities

Rate: $50/week

Arts & Culture Editor

The Arts & Culture Editor will: 

  • collect story ideas for each story meeting and assign them to contributors

  • edit all Arts & Culture stories for AP Style, accuracy, flow and grammar

  • respond to pitches from contributors and must be willing to communicate with arts & culture leaders and venues both on and off campus

  • be comfortable with assigning and editing day-of coverage

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings and other staff gatherings

Recommended Qualifications

  • experience writing in The Cluster’s Arts & Culture section

  • knowledge of AP Style

  • leadership skills

  • ability to meet hard deadlines 

  • ability to give and receive feedback

  • familiarity with Mercer’s and Macon’s arts & culture communities

Rate: $45/week

Sports Editor

The Sports Editor will:

  • collect story ideas for each story meeting and assign them to contributors 

  • edit all Sports stories for AP Style, accuracy, flow and grammar

  • respond to pitches from contributors 

  • communicate with Mercer Athletics

  • be comfortable with assigning and editing day-of coverage 

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings and other staff gatherings

  • be a fan of the Mercer Bears :) 

Recommended Qualifications

  • experience writing in The Cluster’s Sports section

  • knowledge of AP Style

  • leadership skills

  • thorough knowledge of sports and sportswriting

  • ability to meet hard deadlines

  • ability to give and receive feedback

  • familiarity with Mercer’s and Macon’s athletics scenes.

Rate: $45/week

Copy Editor

The Copy Editor will:

  • edit articles for grammar, style, clarity and organization

  • hold periodic workshops with staff to teach grammar and style basics

  • fact check articles

  • be well organized and a strong communicator

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings and other staff gatherings

Recommended Qualifications

  • strong knowledge of AP Style and grammar

  • attention to detail

  • excellent communication skills

  • ability to meet hard deadlines

  • ability to give and receive feedback

Rate: $45/week

Multimedia Editor

The Multimedia Editor will:

  • oversee and assist staff in creating multimedia works including podcasts, videos, and photo galleries

  • ensure that contributors responsible for taking photos complete their assignments on time and submit them (with captions) by the deadline

  • take photos as needed

  • help contributors check out equipment

  • communicate with multimedia staff to assign a photo or take one themselves when covering Breaking News

  • be comfortable working with reporters of all experience levels

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings, layout meetings, and other staff gatherings

Recommended Qualifications

  • experience taking and/or editing photos for publication

  • leadership skills

  • ability to meet hard deadlines 

  • ability to give and receive feedback

  • familiarity with DSLR cameras and basic audio gear

  • experience with the Adobe Creative Suite 

Rate: $45/week

Page Designer

Page Designers will:

  • layout our monthly print publication

  • create an engaging yet cohesive and professional look for the newspaper 

  • be comfortable experimenting with text, photos, graphic designs, and more

  • be responsible for holding layout meetings and communicating with the section editors at these meetings about which stories are ready for print publication

Recommended Qualifications: 

  • experience in layout and/or graphic design

  • proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop

Rate: $90/issue, issues published ~monthly

Social Media Manager

The Social Media Manager will:

  • create a schedule for and post photos and videos across Twitter, Instagram and Facebook

  • tag the contributors in each post

  • create engaging social media content that appeals to our audience

  • respond to comments and messages as necessary

  • occasionally post calls for contributors or other assigned content from the editorial staff

  • live-tweet or live-stream breaking news and events

  • attend story meetings, editor meetings, layout meetings, and other staff gatherings

Recommended Qualifications: 

  • experience managing social media for an organization or publication

  • knowledge of AP Style

  • familiarity with Facebook, Twitter and Instagram ...and maybe TikTok :)

Rate: $35/week

Business Manager

The Business Manager will:

  • aid Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor in managing the yearly budget

  • facilitate payroll by gathering timesheets, keeping track of staff published work, and sending filled out timesheets to The Cluster’s advisor on time

  • attend Board of Appropriations budget meetings with Editor-in-Chief once per semester

Recommended Qualifications: 

  • demonstrated interest in business management and/or advertising

  • experience managing an organization's budget or large sums of money

Rate: $45/week

Advertising Manager

The Ad Sales Manager will:

  • facilitate relationships with Mercer and Macon organizations and businesses to sell ads for the print and web editions of The Cluster

  • work with the Business Manager to organize payment information for ads sold

Recommended Qualifications: 

  • experience being thoroughly organized

  • outgoing and open to engaging with business owners

  • some experience in sales or marketing

  • creative thinking and a self-starter attitude

Rate: $30/week + 20% commission on all ads sold

Community Outreach Manager

The Community Outreach Manager will:

  • organize opportunities for the staff to engage with the Mercer and Macon communities through service

  • facilitate relationships with on-campus organizations to collaborate on projects in the community

  • organizing the annual staff banquet at the end of the academic year with help of Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor

Recommended Qualifications: 

  • experience organizing volunteer or community service events

  • involvement in community service on campus and in the community

Rate: $30/week
