Update: Tornado warning lifted for Mercer campus

Update 7:23 a.m.: The tornado warning ended at 7:15 a.m. Thursday warning. Surrounding counties, including Houston and Twiggs county, remain under a warning.

Classes will continue today as scheduled, according to an email from Mercer.

Mercer's campus was placed under a tornado warning on Thursday morning at 6:46 a.m. Sirens could be heard on campus – and across Middle Georgia – as they warned residents to seek shelter immediately.

The alert is issued for areas in which a "tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar," according to the National Weather Service.

At 6:46 a.m., "a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Lake Tobesofkee, or near Macon, moving east at 30 mph," the National Weather Service wrote in its report Thursday morning.

Radar showed the storm hovering over Mercer's campus at 7:00 a.m. before passing about 10 minutes later. The tornado warning is slated to end at 7:15 a.m. Thursday morning and a tornado watch, issued 12:44 a.m. Thursday morning, is supposed to expire at noon.
