The 2023 Grammy Awards have come and gone and with it, many historic wins and powerful moments occurred. The show was hosted by Trevor Noah for the third consecutive year, fresh off of his departure from The Daily Show. After the past two years were held in April and March, respectively, the show returns to its usual winter runtime. Throughout the night, some major wins took place.
The College Town Film Series hosted a triad of movies at the Douglass Theatre in downtown Macon over the past month, one of which was presented jointly by Mercer professors Evey Wilson Wetherbee and Rachel Schaff on Feb. 9. The Southeast Symposium of the American Journalism Historians Association (AJHA) was an annual event leading into 2020 but just had its first meeting since COVID-19. The AJHA was founded in 1981 and has provided students at all levels of study opportunities to present their research on the history of journalism and how history is captured by media and journalism of that day.

The Mercer beach volleyball team made the decision to switch from the ASUN Conference to the Sun Belt Conference starting in the 2023 season. Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Southern Miss and the University of Louisiana Monroe were in the conference previously. Joining the Bears in the switch will be Stephan F. Austin, the College of Charleston and the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Men’s Basketball
Mercer’s baseball team hosted their annual First Pitch Classic on Jan. 18 to kickstart the 2023 season. The event featured a cash bar, a silent auction and an opportunity to win either $5,000 or $10,000 in a raffle.
A party school is a school typically located in a large city (or city in which a large population of the residents is college students) that tends to have high enrollment, a prominent Greek presence and a sizable number of student-led organizations, according to professor and writer Rayelle Davis. These factors combined equate to an environment welcoming of parties. From the 140+ student-run organizations to the incredibly active Greek life, Mercer seems to align with many aspects of a party school. However, many students fail to consider Mercer a party school because of its discouragement of party culture.
Mercer’s Ousman Jabang '23 was selected 75th overall in the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, to CF Montréal on Dec. 21, 2022. Jabang has played for the Bears since he signed with the team out of Ola High School in McDonough, Georgia.
