Bears Breakdown: Updates in beach volleyball, men's lacrosse and men's tennis

Beach Volleyball

The beach volleyball team traveled to Conway, S.C. to play games on Friday and Saturday. They went 0-4 in the tournament and now have a 4-21 overall record.

The Bears played the University of South Carolina and lost 5-0. Boeve/Polychrones lost 21-11 and 21-16, O'Mara/Benson lost 21-12 and 21-8, and Paddock/Hood lost 21-18 and 21-13. Miller/Scoggins lost 21-11 and 21-9 while Corbett/Morris lost 21-11 and 21-8.

After a tough loss to the Gamecocks, Mercer took on the College of Charleston, fighting hard but losing 3-2. Boeve/Polychrones won in three sets by scores of 21-16, 17-21, and 15-13. O'Mara/Benson lost 21-15 and 21-19, and Paddock/Hood lost 21-7 and 21-14. Miller/Scoggins won in three: 22-20, 15-21, 17-15, Corbett/Morris lost 21-9 and 21-14, and Earwood/Bohling lost 21-15, 21-6.

On Saturday, the Bears lost to the University of North Carolina Wilmington 4-1.

Boeve/Polychrones picked up the only win over the Hawks, defeating their opponents in three sets: 26-24, 21-17, and 15-7.

Mercer also played Coastal Carolina University and lost 5-0. Miller/Scoggins played a close match but lost in three: 21-11, 24-22, and 15-4.

The Bears will travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Friday, Apr. 15 to play in a four-game tournament against the University of Louisianna at Monroe, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of North Alabama.

Men’s Lacrosse

Meanwhile, the men’s lacrosse team hosted Hampton at Five Star Stadium on Saturday and won 22-6.

The Bears set the momentum of the game when they scored nine goals before the Pirates even got on the board. The team had eight goals in the first period, three in the second, four in the third and seven in the fourth.

Taylor Dooley went five for five in goals and had two assists, giving him seven points in the game. Cole Leggett had four goals and two assists, and Sean Goldsmith and Nick Rockefeller each had a pair of goals.

With the win, Mercer is now 4-8 overall in the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Bears will travel to Richmond, Virginia on Apr. 16 to compete in their third SoCon game of the season.

Men’s Tennis

The men’s tennis team played matches Apr. 7 against UNC Greensboro and Apr. 9 against East Tennessee State University.

They traveled to Greensboro, N.C. to play the Spartans and lost 2-5 despite doubles wins from Georgadze/Wayenburg (6-4) and Macleod/Branicki (6-3). Branicki was also the only player to win a singles match (6-1, 6-4, and 6-3).

The Bears then picked up and traveled to Johnson City, Tennessee to play the Buccaneers and lost 6-1.

The only two wins of the day came from the second doubles team, Macleod/Branicki (6-3), and the third doubles team, Flynn/Fouilhoux (8-6)

After the two losses this week, the Bears are now 7-13 in the overall season and 1-5 in conference play. The team will travel to Birmingham, Ala. to plat Samford University on Apr. 15.
