Update: A tornado warning for Macon-Bibb and Jones county was lifted in Macon-Bibb at 8:15 a.m. Monday morning.
Macon-Bibb county and Mercer's Macon campus were placed under a tornado warning at 7:53 a.m. Monday morning, the second such weather alert in less than five days. Shelter-in-place orders were given via text to the Mercer Law School at 8:02 a.m.
The alert is issued for areas in which a "tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar," according to the National Weather Service.
"At 7:58 AM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located over Payne City, or over Macon, moving east at 35 mph," according to the National Weather Service.
Payne City sits less than three miles from Mercer's campus.
The warning is set to expire at 8:15 a.m., delaying class start times after the University announced Sunday evening that classes on Macon's campus would continue as scheduled.
