Second Sunday concert attracts community for songs and a sunset

Bragg Jam's Second Sunday concert series continued Sunday, April 12 on Coleman Hill, overlooking downtown Macon.

Bragg Jam hosted its second of three Second Sunday events featuring The Via Vicary Band on Coleman Hill on Sunday, April 12.

“Second Sunday is one of the free events for our community,” Bragg Jam president, Olivia Walter said.

It is one of many events, like the Bragg Jamuary competition the organization hosted earlier this year, that Bragg Jam puts on throughout the year in hopes of continuing to be known as a music city.

Tracy Archer, a lifetime Macon resident, said she has been going to Second Sunday concerts for the past 10 years and has very fond memories of them.

“This is one of my favorite times of year. I always come to Second Sunday. I’m a Maconite and getting out and enjoying the vibe and the music is what I like,” Archer said.

Walter added that she sees Second Sunday as an ideal way to kick off a week.

“It’s a great place to have a picnic in the evening and wind down your Sunday right before you’re starting off Monday,” she said. “Those Sunday scaries don’t have to sit in whenever you’re here at Second Sunday.”

She also pointed out that the event is intended not just for college-age students but is catered to an audience that is representative of Macon.

Becky Ehalt said she went to the event hoping to see a sunset and enjoyed the music while she waited.

“‘Tennessee Whiskey.’ – I liked that,” Ehalt said of the 2015 song by country music artist Chris Stapleton.

Sunday’s band performed a wide variety of well known songs including several Bruno Mars songs and a single they recently released called “Rewind.”

The band’s lead vocalist, Via Vicary, is a “vibrant pop-soul artist known for her powerhouse vocals and magnetic, bubbly personality,” according to her website.

Bragg Jam made an exception to their efforts to “share as much love as possible with our local musicians,” because the board fell in love with the band’s application for their competition in January which they were unable to compete in due to scheduling issues, Walter said.

“We wanted to make sure they had an opportunity to showcase how they perform here in Macon,” she said.

Sweet Diesel, a local band, is set to play at the next Second Sunday concert May 10 on Coleman Hill.
