SGA welcomes Mercerians young and old

Hey Bears!

On behalf of the Student Government Association, we would like to warmly welcome you to Mercer University.

You are entering the hub of excitement and growth in Central Georgia. Mercer is explosively growing, and you get to witness all of it.

Mercer has received national attention for the basketball team’s success; Princeton Review named Mercer one of the best 379 colleges for the 11th consecutive year; the Townsend School of Music became an All-Steinway School; Mercer’s football team has moved to the Southern Conference; and the transformation around College Street and Tattnall Square Park has almost come to completion.

Those are just some things that have happened this summer, and it shows the world the depth of Mercer University.

If you haven’t figured it out yet, Mercer was a good choice.

Over the summer, SGA worked with the administration to institute new initiatives that provide students with a better experience.

One such initiative is our new Mercer app, which we call Mercer Mobile. After months of planning, SGA and Mercer’s IT department have launched a brand new, campus and community-wide app.

Mercer Mobile is now the official go-to app for everything happening on Mercer’s campus in Macon.

Getting Mercer students more involved on campus and in the community is another SGA objective.

For that reason, we are working with College Hill Alliance and Turbo Vote to make voting in college easier.

Mercerians deserve to be heard in Macon-Bibb, especially since we will live here for several years.

This summer, College Hill Alliance and SGA partnered with Turbo Vote to help register voters at Mercer to increase student engagement in our community.

To launch this initiative, we are hosting a region-wide “Turn Out To Vote” concert on Sept. 19 in Mercer Village, featuring Ben Rector, in partnership with Quadworks and other higher education institutions in this area.

This event is going to be huge and one of many Mercer Village Block Parties. However, these events and initiatives wouldn’t be possible without Mercer’s commitment to its students.

From the moment you step on campus, we hope you learn that Mercerians care, plain and simple.

Mercer will not let you fall through the cracks.

If you are struggling with academics, roommates, financial woes or even missing your mother’s home cooked food, someone is there to help you.

Get to know Victoria and I, your Peer Advisor or Resident Assistant, professors and staff. We will most certainly be reaching out to you.

Everyone at Mercer is here to help you. All you need to do is ask.

After reading this letter and experiencing your first days at Mercer, we hope that you are even more excited to begin your adventures and begin making your mark.

Our best advice for you: Make Mercer your home. Get up, go out, get involved and explore the inviting community that is Macon and Mercer. Your freshman experience will only be as fun as you make it.

Get your growl on and be ready for a fantastic year!
