Jalen Cobb signs a young fan's autograph at the basketball tip-off event in Mercer Village on Monday. The team will host their first game of the season on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. against Lagrange College.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted an event Monday in Mercer Village to kick off their seasons. The event featured free pizza and t-shirts as well as bounce houses and basketball goals.

Fans lined the street to get team photos autographed by the players they love watching on the court. After autographs, the 2022-2023 roster was introduced to fans and then players and coaches visited with the crowd.

Much like last year’s event, there was also live music and games to keep fans entertained. The cheer and dance teams also performed as part of the event. Breonda Turner '25 said she enjoys getting to perform and watching others perform at events such as the tip-off as well as in-season games.

“It’s nice seeing the talent we have here at Mercer,” Turner said. “I love performing and showing what we have.”

One of Turner's most memorable performances was last season when the women’s team beat Furman University to claim the Southern Conference title and the team was able to cheer them on in Asheville, North Carolina.

The men’s team is set to host the first game of the season Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. against Lagrange College on campus at Hawkins Arena.

The women’s team will also host the first game of their season Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in Hawkins Arena against Middle Tennessee State University.
