Otis Redding's legacy as a musician and an individual who wanted to help children find a passion for music was celebrated with the “Otis Redding King of Soul: The Legacy Continues” concert at The Grand Opera House on his birthday, Sept. 9.

Mercer has been a presenting sponsor of the Macon Film Festival, which took place on the third weekend of August this year, for the past 10 years. Yet, organizers say there is a lack of student involvement when it comes to coming to attending events, submitting films and volunteering.

Mercer will hold its 17th annual Building the Beloved Community Symposium from Sept. 15-16. This year’s event will mark the first time the symposium has been held in person and at full speed since 2019, and it will be free to all who wish to attend.

Dragon Con is an annual convention held in Atlanta every Labor Day weekend. It began in 1987 and has evolved to be one of the “largest multi-media, popular culture convention(s) focusing on science fiction & fantasy, gaming, comics, literature, art, music and film in the universe,” according to its website.

As Mercer University begins a new school year, local coffee shop Z Beans Coffee has continued its rapid expansion across state lines. The single-origin, specialty coffee and tea retailer and wholesaler will have ten locations in operation by the end of the year.

The Mercer community was excited to see what the football team would do against the Auburn University Tigers after last year when they scored twice on the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, despite the odds. Playing a top SEC school has become a tradition for Mercer football and fans have been having a blast with it.
