A free streaming service has been introduced for students to use while making campus their home away from home. The service allows students to stream free shows and movies while connected to the university’s Wi-Fi.
Mercer Cinema, as it is called, is available on a variety of devices and includes a vast array of genres from horror to musicals. Titles currently on the website include hits like "Beetlejuice," "Aladdin" and "A Quiet Place." Student Aaliyah Olaoye ‘28 says it is a very convenient way to unwind after a long day of school work.
“I don’t have streaming services at home unless I use my friends account, with this new site I can watch shows and movies without having to bother my friends," Olaoye said.
With many other students like Olaoye who want to pass time and may not have any streaming platforms, this new website is available anywhere on campus that has access to the university's internet. Although not every movie or show will be on the site, the list of movies and bingeable shows on the site is often updated as new releases come out.
A spokesperson for the service touted the mobility of Mercer Cinema and the savings that it could have for Mercer students who, using it, can avoid purchasing movie tickets or streaming service subscriptions.
"Swank delivers Hollywood content all over the world, providing a memorable movie experience anywhere a movie is shown outside of a movie theater and the privacy of one's home," Alma Gabeljic, senior account executive for Swank, said.
Nevaeh Wilson '28 is majoring in Journalism and minoring in Film Studies. She has been writing for The Cluster since her freshman year, and has worked for Mercer's ESPN studio. She enjoys watching college and professional sporting events.
