The Wesleyan Wolves made history when they tipped off as the first women’s hockey team in Middle Georgia Sept. 27. Up against Georgia Southern’s Ice Eagles in their first match, the Wolves managed a 12-0 shutout, up 8-0 by the end of the first period.
Wesleyan’s side of the stadium was packed. Fans were dressed in purple hockey jerseys waving purple streamers screamed as Wesleyan hockey players scored goal after goal. The crowd roared after Keeleigh Bott, ‘30, scored her third goal during the first period to complete a hat trick.
Caleb Cameron, head coach of the Wolves, has a four year old daughter who was in the stands that day. He said having his family in attendance for the blowout match was “super special.”

Four years ago, Wesleyan College President Meghan Blight had the dream of bringing women’s hockey to Wesleyan and Middle Georgia. In 2024, Wesleyan created their women’s hockey team which became the first women’s college hockey team in all of Middle Georgia. When asked about this, Blight explained it was about advancing the sport.
“Wesleyan's known for first. We were the first college chartered to grant degrees to women,” Blight said. “It made sense to have this as a first as well.”
Blight dropped the first ceremonial puck before the game began.
Skylar Young ‘30, a Wolves goalie, beamed after the game.
“I feel amazed,” Young said. “Just starstruck with everyone coming and all the support”
Ashley Garcia Vidal ‘27, a student at Wesleyan College, said it was her first time watching a hockey game. When she was made aware of the historic moment, she emphasized the joy and pride she felt for the women involved in the game.
Wesleyan will face Georgia Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Macon Coliseum.
