Mercer University prides itself on its ability to teach students how to change the world by developing programs like Mercer On Mission, a focal point of the "Research that Reaches Out" ethos. One Mercer On Mission trip led to Imwe, a small business founded in 2021 that sells bags made in Rwanda to Mercer students.

On Nov. 6, Bike Walk Macon held their second Open Streets Macon event of the year. The event was held on Clayton Street., which connects the Vineville and Pleasant Hill neighborhoods. Residents enjoyed the afternoon sun while painting crosswalks and engaging in other community activities alongside people they might have otherwise known only in passing.

On Nov. 20, the 2022 World Cup begins in Qatar, though the 2022 tournament has long been blemished by the very country hosting the international competition. The impracticality of the venue and the incorrigible human rights record tied to the construction of the soccer infrastructure are two blatant examples of why Qatar is not deserving of the tournament.

On Oct. 18, the Macon Friends of the Library opened a physical bookstore on 5494 Forsyth Rd. The Friends of the Library is a collection of organizations that started around 50 years ago. The organizations serve in different communities, but all have the same, universal purpose. The organizations, according to Mercer student Ally Brooks ‘23, aren’t libraries so much as they are lifelines for libraries across the globe.

A few years ago in a meeting, it was suggested that the Dean of Students takes the place of the Student Government Association (SGA) president for a day and that the SGA president takes the Dean’s position. The idea was at first mentioned jokingly. No one thought it would take flight in the future.

For many college students, the upcoming Georgia midterms will be the first election where they are voting age. While Nov. 8 may seem far away, the deadline to register to vote in Georgia is Oct. 11, just a few days away.

Takisha Smith, the ever-friendly worker at the front desk at Mercer’s cafeteria, has a habit of asking students how their day is going as they walk in to grab some food. Sam Figiel ‘25 is among the students who frequently ask about Smith’s day in return. Usually, her response is positive. But one day, Figiel said, she was feeling overwhelmed.

Mercer’s Historic Quad transformed into an ancient Greek arena replete with teams whose focus was to honor their respective god or goddess on Sept. 23. Acts of strength of body and mind proved which team was most indebted to their respective deity, all followed by a skit from each team about a scene from a Great Book of their choosing.
