Mercer released the Annual Security Report and Annual Fire Safety Report this morning in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act.
The information in the report is from the Office of General Counsel, the Chief of Mercer Police and designees, Office of Equity and Compliance, Student Affairs, Human Resources, Residence Life, Counseling and Psychological Services as well as other University Departments, according to the report.
The Macon Campus section of the report includes the main Macon Campus, the Mercer University School of Medicine Valdosta Clinical Campus and the Mercer Engineering Research Center.
According to the report, Mercer defines hazing as “any act which endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or which destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, a group or organization. The express or implied consent of the victim will not be a defense. Apathy or acquiescence in the presence of hazing is a violation of this rule.”
Hazing can be reported by filing a report with MERPO, submitting a written and signed statement to the Vice President of Student Affairs or designee or an anonymous report through the University’s Hazing Reporting Form.
One hazing incident was reported on campus during the 2025 school year.
The following statistics were pulled directly from the Annual Security Report.
There were seven reported rapes, six of which occurred in student housing facilities, decreasing over 50 percent from the 16 cases reported in 2024.
Stalking reports stayed about on par with previous years. 14 cases were reported in 2025, 15 in 2024 and 12 in 2023. Dating violence rose to six cases from the previous five in 2024, while domestic violence reports dropped to zero.
One case of intimidation based on sexual orientation and one case of destruction/damage/vandalism of property based on race were reported. These were the only two hate offences reported in 2025.
There were 10 reported cases of burglary, five of which occurred in student housing, exponentially increasing from one case reported in both 2023 and 2024.
Nine motor vehicle thefts were reported, increasing slightly from the six and seven cases in 2023 and 2024, respectively.
The decline in liquor law violations continued in 2025, dropping to 15. There were 37 reports in 2023 and 25 reports in 2024. Drug abuse violations broke the downward trend, jumping up to four in 2025 from one in 2024.
No fires were reported on campus in 2025.
At Orientation and throughout the school year, MERPO, along with the Title IX Coordinator and other organizations and departments, present students with crime prevention and awareness sessions. The sessions include, but are not limited to, sexual assault, domestic violence and alcohol and drug related issues. Students are also informed on how to report sexual misconduct.
Mercer also conducts hazing prevention and awareness programming via Canvas.
Students are prompted to report crimes to Mercer Police at (478) 301-4357.
