William D. Underwood to step down from presidency in 2026

The university announced Friday that President William D. Underwood intends to step down from his position at Mercer and return to teaching in 2026. A committee to determine the university's 19th president will be formed in the coming days, according to the university, and led by Board of Trustees Chair Thomas Bishop, a former executive at Southern Company.
