Seven black women competed in the Miss Old Gold and Black pageant from the Iota Eta Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. on Saturday in Toney Auditorium. Taliyah Battle '27 took home the victory on a night that judged contestants based on their presentation, their charitable platform and their overall message.
World Mental Health Day, observed annually on Oct. 10, highlights the importance of mental health awareness and access to support. At Mercer, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is using the month of October to promote mental well-being through campus partnerships and educational initiatives.
Sharon Holland, professor of American Studies at the University of North Carolina--Chapel Hill, delivered the Lamar Lectures on Monday and Tuesday in the President's Dining Room. The Lamar Lectures are hosted annually by the Spencer B. King Center for Southern Studies at Mercer with a goal of promoting "the permanent preservation of Southern culture, history, and literature," per the series' website.
Mercer Players performed the play “Silent Sky” by Lauren Gunderson at Tatnall Square Center for the Arts on Sept. 24-27. The play retells the historical story of an aspiring scientist, Henrietta Leavitt, played by Karina Nirenberg ‘29, and her journey to try and discover the vastness of the universe while wanting to be taken seriously as a woman in her field.
Catrett Locke Casting is coming to Mercer University, as well as Macon and Savannah, Ga. looking for students, athletes and faculty as paid background extras in early May.
After being told to switch instruments in middle school, Lucas Meinberg ‘26, playing the tuba at the time, attempted the sousaphone, which can weigh around 30 pounds and must be carried on the player's shoulder. But at the start of his high school career, Meinberg discovered his love for an instrument outside of the brass family. Meinberg, a little less laboriously than the sousaphone, picked up the flute as a freshman.
Baptist Collegiate Ministry hosted “Good to Be Loved,” a campus-wide worship night in Willingham Hall along with other organizations like AGAPE and Delight Ministries on Saturday, April 11.
Mercer University’s Fencing Club held a fundraiser involving some of its members who fenced in maid outfits. The fundraiser featured a maid cafe with treats for sale in order to purchase equipment and boost recognition of the team on campus.
Sigma Gamma Rho announced that they have been officially reinstated as an on-campus sorority after 25 years at a neophyte presentation in Toney Auditorium at 6:22 p.m. on Sunday, March 15. Nine students were inducted at the ceremony as official members of the Xi Psi chapter of the sorority.
Mercer University celebrated BearFest, an annual event that showcases global culture, in Penfield Hall and Cruz Plaza on Friday, March 13. The event had food trucks, student organization booths and live performances, among other activities.
