Excitement filled Cruz Plaza on Friday, Sept. 11, as Mercer University students received their sorority bids and were officially placed into Panhellenic houses.
Mercer’s Service and Civic Engagement office hosted its first Climb to Remember on Friday, Sept. 11. This remembrance honored first responders on the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Students and staff were invited to climb the University Center steps to pay tribute by simulating what first responders endured as they rescued people from the World Trade Center, said Margaret Rooyakkers, Assistant Director of Service and Civic Engagement at Mercer.
The morning of Sept. 11, 2001, was a morning many on campus would never forget. On the grounds of Mercer, the event unfolded with a mixture of shock, horror and disbelief for teachers and students alike. A quarter of a century later, many still remember the day.
Mercer University unveiled the first public renderings of the new student center that will sit at the heart of campus on Tuesday in the University Center. The yet-to-be-named building will be constructed on the former site of the Connell Student Center, which was demolished this summer.

Addison Hill '30, Annabella Shenoy '30, David Donelly '30 and Gabrielle Barclay '30 won the election for the senate’s freshman seats, while Safia Massoud '29 and Kome Onowotu '29 filled the sophomore seats. Onowotu is this year’s Senator at Large.
Canvas, Mercer's digital classroom and course manager, worked on Friday morning just a day after it displayed a "currently undergoing scheduled maintenance" message after its parent company, Instructure, suffered a ransomware attack by ShinyHunters, a cybercrime group. Newsweek reported it found only school districts in Georgia were impacted by the outage and that no universities in the state had been hacked.

The inaugural Anya Krugovoy Silver Poetry Prize, a newly established award that invites students at Mercer University not just to compete, but to celebrate poetry as an art form, was awarded to Isabella Ragsdale '26, who penned the poem "Semelparous." The award was created, its organizers said, to remember the life and legacy of Anya Krugovoy Silver.
Model Arab League walked away from their National competition in Washington, D.C. and Bethesda, Md. on March 26-29 with five delegates winning awards after competing against over 20 other colleges and universities from around the country.
After being told to switch instruments in middle school, Lucas Meinberg ‘26, playing the tuba at the time, attempted the sousaphone, which can weigh around 30 pounds and must be carried on the player's shoulder. But at the start of his high school career, Meinberg discovered his love for an instrument outside of the brass family. Meinberg, a little less laboriously than the sousaphone, picked up the flute as a freshman.
The new building will be part of a years-long, “Building for BEARS” project that will effectively replace the existing building with a newer facility. The acronym, a favorite rhetorical device of President Penny Elkins, stands for belong, engage, aspire, relax and savor.
